Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace

Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace

This page is currently being updated...

Background

It is estimated that 25% of all accidents at work are alcohol and drug related whilst drug using employees are three times more likely to require sickness leave / benefit. In light of these findings the Home Office have encouraged Drug and Alcohol Action Teams around the country to make contact with employers and to raise the issues of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

You may have workers in your company who misuse drugs or alcohol.

  • How can you minimise the effects on your workplace - particularly if you work in a safety - critical industry?
  • You may have people in your company that have family members with a drug and alcohol problem, how can you support them?

For a number of years, Norfolk DAAT, in conjunction with NORCAS, have worked to assist local employers. If you would like further advice or information in setting up a drugs policy within your own organisation or running an awareness session for your employees, please contact Michael Hutchinson, Training and Workforce Development coordinator at Norfolk DAAT.
