Alcohol
Alcohol is part of everyday life for many people in Norfolk. The production and sale of alcohol generates significant revenue for the county. Its sensible use helps some people relax, socialise and enjoy themselves. However, the misuse of alcohol can have far reaching consequences.
The harms associated with alcohol misuse are preventable. There is a solid foundation of work in Norfolk, but much more needs doing to meet the proven need. NDAAT and NDAP have been directly involved in:
- Commissioning substance misuse treatment services that provide alcohol interventions for those people attending treatment with poly drug use
- Research into the policy implications of the introduction of the Licensing Act 2003, in Norfolk, in conjunction with Dr John Greenaway of the University of East Anglia
- Research into alcohol related harms in Norfolk, undertaken by the Eastern Region Public Health Observatory, that was published in September 2007
- Development of the Norwich NRF funded Safer Drinking City Programme and the establishment of the Norwich Alcohol Board
- Development of a 12-month programme of alcohol harm education work for the Western Area Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (Breckland and King’s Lynn and the West of Norfolk) to be implemented in 2008/09
- Leading on the development and implementation of an Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for Norfolk 2009-12.

The N-DAP Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy 2009 -12 was developed over a 9 month period in 2008 as part of the response to the identified need in the county. The aim of this strategy is to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol in Norfolk.
This strategy will be implemented over the next 3 years through the development of a series of action plans and/or the alignment of existing, agency specific action plans.
The development and implementation of the action plans will be guided by a multi-agency steering group. There will be a standing core membership. People with specialist knowledge in a particular area of work will be invited onto the steering group to help devise an action plan on a specific theme.
Once completed, the action plans will be posted on the N-DAP website and performance against them monitored by a lead officer in N-DAAT, who will report to key groups within the N-DAP structure and across the broader partnership.
