Summary

  • are a clear or straw-coloured liquid in a small bottle
  • the name poppers comes from the popping sound when the top of the capsule on the bottle is squeezed to release the drug, they now normally come in small screw or plug top bottles
  • was first discovered in 1857 and was used to relieve chest pains

  • brief but intense head-rush
  • flushed face and neck
  • effects fade after 2 to 5 minutes
  • headache, feeling faint and sick
  • regular use can cause skin problems around the mouth and nose
  • dangerous for people with anaemia, glaucoma, and breathing or heart problems
  • if spilled, can burn the skin
  • may be fatal if swallowed
  • mixing Viagra with alkyl nitrites is very dangerous and can cause dizziness, fainting and heart problems
