How is it taken? back to top

  • products with gas are sometimes squirted into the mouth at the back of the throat
  • sniffed or breathed into the lungs
  • glues, thinners are put onto cloths, into sleeves or plastic bags where they are breathed into the lungs

Effects back to top

  • intoxication, similar to being drunk but effects are short-term; intoxication can be sustained by repeated use throughout the day
  • hallucination may occur
  • thick head, dizziness, giggles and dreaminess
  • affected senses can lead to accidents
  • cocaine increases aggression and irritability and can lead people into conflict or fights
  • squirting gas at back of throat can cause instant death; the body reacts by producing fluid that floods the lungs
  • risk of suffocation from using a plastic bag over the head to sniff solvent contained in bag
  • long term use may lead to damage of brain, kidneys and liver

  • shopkeepers cannot sell lighter refills to anyone under 18; gases, glues and aerosols cannot be sold to under 18s or anyone thought to be buying the substances for them if it is believed that the product is intended for abuse
