How is it taken?
Rolled into cigarettes or cigars which are lit and the smoke inhaled
Placed into a pipe, lit and smoke inhaled
Effects
Tobacco contains nicotine which is a stimulant
Increased blood pressure and heart rate
Cigarette smoking is strongly linked with physical dependence
Can cause sickness and dizziness in first time smokers
Regular smokers report relaxation and reduction in anxiety
Long term smoking increases risk of serious diseases including lung cancer and heart disease
Smoking whilst pregnant can increase the risk of babies with a small birth weight
Legal status
It is illegal to sell tobacco to children under the age of 16
